Finding Homes “Fur” Everyone

A few weeks ago I visited Golden West Moving and I was “moved” when I met their General Manager, Rachel Lefler. As I entered the front door I was greeted by Rachel’s adorable dog named Pear. The Mini French Bulldog scooted over and welcomed me with the most upbeat, I-can-do-anything attitude. It seemed as if Pear had been working there with her mother for years. I learned later that Rachel had just adopted Pear a few weeks ago. I thought what a noble thing to do. As if it isn’t enough to go to a shelter and take on the responsibility of adopting an animal. Rachel had taken on the responsibility of a dog that was paralyzed from the waste down. I immediately fell in love with Pear and truly admired her owner.

I asked Rachel if she would be interested in sharing her story to give comfort to others that might be considering doing to same. Rachel and her family have adopted dogs for the past 13 years. Rachel volunteers at the Pug Nation Rescue of Los Angeles. Pear is Rachel’s first dog that she’s taking care of on her own. Rachel set out to adopt a young black female pug. But, while volunteering she was introduced to Pear. Pear had been at the shelter for over four months and when Rachel first met her she was a bit hesitant. After giving it some thought, she decided to go for it. Rachel states, “she is the one who got lucky here ... Giving a dog a chance with a disability is so rewarding ... I can take her out on the paddle board everyday!”
When asked what her biggest challenge has been, Rachel stated, “Pear can’t go to the bathroom on her own and wears diapers. That’s it really.” Pear has been uplifting to the entire staff at Golden West Moving and brings joy to everyone that meets her.
Our featured pet is a 9 1/2 year-old Pug named Ludwig. This little guy has been at the shelter for over two years. He’s slowly lost use of his back end and now can’t walk much at all. He has a bit of separation anxiety ... He really wants to be near people and because he doesn’t like other dogs at all he’s separate from all the others. Ludwig has a sensitive tummy, so he's on a special diet that's pretty bland and because of his spinal issue he needs his bladder expressed several times per day. Once you've done it a couple times, it's pretty easy to get the hang of it. Despite the hind-end issue, he still likes to get out for walks in a stroller or with a supportive sling. This little man still has a lot of love in him left to give. Ludwig is looking for that special someone that wants to take care of him.
